Typical Causes and Challenges of Global Gas Flaring

Typical Causes and Challenges of Global Gas Flaring

Figure 1: Gas Flaring: Courtesy of World Bank The primary reasons for gas flaring at typical industrial facility includes: Old industrial facilities including oil &, chemical, petrochemicals, refineries, Cement, ….Lack of infrastructure to capture associated gas with oil production system. This could be due to remote locations, low incentives to recover the gas, low gas quantities or economically unattractive to recover the gas.Equipment failure and malfunction including process upsetsEmergency gas flaring. The frequency of the emergency gas flaring is low, which limits the feasibility of developing and installing equipment to recover it.Purge and pilot gas. Purge gas is used to…
Strategies for Achieving Zero Routine and Emergency Gas Flaring in Industrial Facilities

Strategies for Achieving Zero Routine and Emergency Gas Flaring in Industrial Facilities

To achieve the Zero Routine Flaring (ZRF) Initiative by 2030, here is the list of latest developed strategies to achieve this ambitious goal through Eliminate, Substitute, Reduce, and Recover strategies. Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 Initiative Launched in 2015, the ZRF Initiative commits governments and oil companies, to end routine flaring no later than 2030. Gas flaring is the 160-year-old industry practice of wastefully burning, rather than using or conserving, associated gas, a by-product of oil production. The flaring of gas contributes to climate change and impacts the environment through the emission of CO2, black carbon and other pollutants. It…

Global Flared Gas Recovery Strategies

To meet the zero global zero flaring initiative by 2030, we provide different gas flaring recovery strategies to meet the global commitment. These strategies will be discussed below in details.  In industrial facilities, the flare gas recovery system is designed to collect the routine gas flaring from the flare header before reaching the flare stack and recycle it back to the process plants. Flare gas recovery can be accomplished through the following options: Flowback flared gas to existing low pressure compressorsInstalling of flare gas recovery systemsLoad reduction credits Minimize the flared, purged and leaked gas After exercising all options of eliminating…
Beyond Zero Flaring & Monetization Strategies In Global Circular Carbon Economy

Beyond Zero Flaring & Monetization Strategies In Global Circular Carbon Economy

As of January 2022, and directly after the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26, the total number of countries announced their pledges to net zero emission or carbon neutrality reached 136 countries. Also, 234 major cities and 683 major companies announced their pledges to achieve net zero emissions or carbon neutrality. Gas flaring is one of the major contributors to global warming that can be tackled through the strategic design of new facilities or deployment of new technologies to minimize the flaring. The World Bank reported in July 2020 that the satellite data shows global gas flaring in 2019…
